Out of Work Projects
Below are some examples of my projects and small pieces I have worked on out side of work or university.
Tool Peg Board Design
This design was a small idea I had after noticing how much of a mess my notes on measurements etc were. I decided to design a notebook cover for a place for all the notes and jots while working. I picked the peg board design as it’s a common feature in many workshops and DIY areas. I chose to use the greens, blues, and purples for the tools to make the colours more uniform and a little less monotone than mostly greys for metal items.
Marker Drawings
I decided to improve my skills in the use of markers in sketching and drawing, at university I used the markers only occasionally so thought using them would give me more mediums to use in design and in hoodies and ideas outside of work. I have mainly been working off drawing prompts to make sure I work on a range of different ideas and projects, but some are just random ideas I have.
The example image to the right was an idea I came up with after practising sketching hands, I wanted to do magic coming off a hand but wasn’t sure how to visualise it but took inspiration from the smoke in the movie Mulan to make a magical effect. Originally I was going to have the smoke lighter with no silver lining but thought the dark smoke would work better with a light outline.
You can see more of the marker work here.
Domann’s Finest Logo/Label
A little while ago one of my friends was telling me about his hobby of making homemade mead (among other things) which I found really interesting. This gave me the idea of creating him some logos/label for them and I was looking for a small project to do. I made sure the design had the presence of the honeycomb to be the main feature, originally it was going to be a rosettes where the bottom ribbons where going to be bee wings, but once it was roughly drawn out I decided the wings didn’t work but kept the main honeycomb in the design.
This was a surprisingly quick to mock up, it took two hours to make two iterations of the logo. The other design can be seen on the blog post here.
Glass Ball Light Frame
I wanted to do some 3D modelling practice and translating that into a 2D Illustrator design, when looking into what to design I settled on Glass Ball Lights and similar lights as they gave me the opportunity to practice ropes and netting while creating something visually pleasing. I started off with modelling the design in Rhino, the original idea was to have four frames of lights at different angles and levels, but as I was creating the other levels I realised that it was become crowded and the smaller details becoming lost so reduced it back down to one frame.
Once the design was done I used the Make2D command to transfer the design over into illustrator, before going back over and adding any of the details that didn’t make it across. Once that was done I added the colour. There ended up being two version of this design one with an outline and one without.
The 3D model and the over version can be found on the blog post here.
